McNamara Hut
McNamara Hut is a winter-only backcountry hut in the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association system, built in 1982 as one of the original two huts (with Margy’s Hut). It’s memorialized to Margy McNamara, and the hut accommodates up to 16 people. Sleeping space is split between a main-level bunk room for 4 and an upstairs area with one private double room plus 10 additional single beds in a communal sleeping area.
It’s equipped with heat and a wood oven, and the hut has wood refrigeration (no water system; snow melt is part of the setup). Sleeping gear is provided (mattresses and pillows). Sanitation is via an outhouse and covered walkway, and there’s no water, no shower, no sauna, no fire ring, no grill, and no dogs/charging. Reservations are required, and the nightly rate is $40 per person (children 12 and under get 50% off). The main winter approach follows a jeep trail from the Hunter Creek Trailhead, with several junctions and blue-diamond signage at intersections; alternate connections include linking from Margy’s Hut or the Benedict Huts.
