Monte Vista Trail #221
Monte Vista Trail #221 is a steep out-and-back long-distance hike in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona, built as a route to reach the historic Monte Vista Peak lookout tower. The climb is sustained enough that most hikers treat it as strenuous, with frequent steep switchbacks as you gain elevation above North Fork Canyon.
Route line-up and core segments: the trail starts at the end of North Fork Rucker Canyon Road (Forest Road 628), then works its way up through North Fork Canyon. A little over 0.9 mile after leaving the trailhead, it passes through a patch of burned trees; later it reaches Buckskin Saddle, marked by a sign, before continuing to the Bear Spring Trail junction.
After Buckskin Saddle the trail resumes switchbacking and includes a largely straight climb through a treeless grassy area that was burned in an earlier fire, with erosion showing up along some of the switchback sections. At the final switchback in this segment, the trail meets the Bear Spring Trail, which drops toward the only natural water source in the area.
From there, the remaining hike is comparatively short but still steep: the trail heads toward the Turtle Mountain Trail junction, then the last push to the top of Monte Vista Peak is a short, steep climb. It climbs up out of the junction, then contouring around the north side brings you just below the storage shed on the east side of the lookout complex.
Terrain and route feel are strongly affected by what you’re climbing through: rocky tread with washouts and downed trees can show up, and seasonal overgrowth can slow progress. Trail reroutes and old-road remnants are part of the upper route character in places, so route-reading matters—especially where the tread crosses back and forth across drainage features.
Logistics and preparation are part of the job here. There’s no drinking water at the trailhead; plan to carry everything you’ll need and treat any Bear Spring water as non-potable and seasonal. Scout the trail before committing when conditions are wet or recently washed out—washouts and erosion-prone switchbacks are a known issue on this route.
