Moose Pass Trail
Moose Pass Trail is the INHT segment managed by the US Forest Service in the Chugach National Forest. It’s a developing link of the Iditarod National Historic Trail with ref in Alaska as ref INHT;TR 365.
Total length is expected to be about 16 miles when complete, with about 12 miles currently constructed and open. The route is designated as a short hiking-specific member route under the INHT network.
Plan for very different tread/terrain by section: the southern portion trends along sidehills above Kenai Lake, while the northern sections move through deep timber and pass near Vagt Lake and Ptarmigan Creek.
Access is tied to the Seward Highway mileposts. A common intercept point is Victor Creek Trailhead at Mile 20 of the Seward Highway, which offers a 1-mile approach to the INHT at that location.
For reaching middle-to-northern portions, use Ptarmigan Creek Campground / Vagt Lake Trailhead as a base, then hike onto the Moose Pass Trail segment from there.
Use is for hikers, trail runners, and backcountry campers. Some sections are also open to winter snowmachine use, and certain connecting branches can accommodate ATVs.
