Mount Fuji Gotemba Trail

Mount Fuji Gotemba Trail (Gotemba Trail) is the long, physically demanding way up Mt. Fuji from the Gotemba side. The route starts at Gotemba 5th Station (about 1,450 m) and climbs to the summit along volcanic terrain over extended mileage, making it a good choice when you want fewer crowds than the most popular routes.

Expect a long ascent: plan on roughly 7–10 hours from the 5th Station to the summit. The descent typically takes about 3–6 hours, but the down portion includes long, sandy sections that can feel fast and loose underfoot when you’re tired.

From the start, the route is relatively underdeveloped: there are few facilities early on at/near the 5th Station, and you’ll generally go longer stretches before reaching the more established hut areas around the 7th and 8th stations. Because of that spacing, carry enough water and supplies for the early part of the climb.

The trail character is dominated by volcanic sand/gravel and barren slopes. On the way down, the route diverges onto the Osunabashiri (often called the “Great Sand Run”) slope, where you can pick up speed over loose, fine dust—use dust-management gear if you expect conditions to be dry.

A key planning point is pacing for altitude and time-on-feet: the long climb plus sparse early facilities means you’ll benefit from starting with plenty of food, hydration, and warm layers for temperature swings. If you’re going for a summit push, plan for the hut areas around the 7th/8th range rather than expecting amenities everywhere along the line.

Access is built around Gotemba: the Gotemba 5th Station is reachable by local buses from Gotemba Station, with service running during daytime hours. Start times depend on the season and bus schedule, so align your departure with the hiking window you intend to use.
