Mount Kinabalu Summit Trail
Mount Kinabalu Summit Trail (Timpohon Trail) is the main guided route up to Low’s Peak on Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. The climb is typically done as a 2-day/1-night plan (or longer for acclimatization), with an overnight stay at Panalaban base camp before the pre-dawn summit push.
Start from Timpohon Gate (1,866 m) and follow the steep staircase route that climbs through tropical rainforest/mountain jungle before transitioning toward exposed granite for the higher sections leading to the summit.
Day 1 is generally the longest hiking block of the ascent, reported around ~6 hours on the standard 2-day climb, reaching Panalaban (Laban Rata) base camp for the night.
On day 2, the summit attempt begins very early (with an overnight wake-up for the Low’s Peak push). The final section becomes steep and more exposed, and it’s described as a granite rock segment with fixed aids (including ladders/handrails/ropes) in the higher zone.
Accommodation at Panalaban base camp is part of the regulated climb logistics: you sleep at Laban Rata (Panalaban), then go for the summit at night and return for the descent the same day as the push.
The route is regulated and guide-led: a certified guide is mandatory, summit access requires registration/permits, and the daily quota is limited (commonly described as 163 permits per day). If weather prevents safe summit climbing, the summit gate can be closed for the day.
Timing and seasonality matter because conditions change with elevation: the commonly recommended climbing window is March–September, with the seasonality tied to drier weather and reduced odds of weather-related disruptions. At the summit, cold temperatures are expected around dawn.
