Mungo Hut
Mungo Hut is a DOC backcountry hut in the Kokatahi River–Whitcombe River area (West Coast). It’s a basic four-bunk hut in the Hokitika area, with free use and first-come, first-served beds. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and toilet facilities (pit latrine).
Access from the West Coast side is usually via the Toaroha valley and Toaroha Saddle: take the track from Poet Hut to Toaroha Saddle as far as Beta Creek, then sidle upstream on a marked route to Saddle Creek. From there, follow the route down to the Mungo riverbed, and continue mostly by riverbed travel to the hut; the track entrance is about 100 m above the junction of Park Stream and Mungo River, with a short steep track up the ridge to the hut.
