North Country National Scenic Trail
North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) is a long-distance hiking route across eight northern states, running from Lake Sakakawea State Park in North Dakota to the Appalachian Trail in Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont (commonly described as about 4,800 miles total). It is a National Scenic Trail designated by Congress in 1980, and it’s administered by the National Park Service in cooperation with federal, state, and local partners and volunteer groups.
Expect a route that mixes public lands and many private-land segments. The trail passes through forests and farmlands, remote terrain and also towns, and it’s built to serve a wide range of long-distance hiking styles—day hikes, week-long backpack trips, and full-through-hikes.
The trail is generally marked with blue rectangular blazes; connector trails use white rectangular blazes on trees. In Wisconsin (part of the mapped corridor for this trail), motorized vehicles are not allowed on the route, and the trail is primarily off-road hiking and backpacking, with some winter-compatible uses on certain sections.
Maintenance and development rely heavily on volunteers coordinated across state chapters and partner organizations. The North Country Trail Association works in partnership with the National Park Service to develop, maintain, protect, and promote the trail across its corridor.
If you’re planning a longer outing on the NCT, treat route conditions and rules as variable because the trail crosses multiple land ownerships. That means regulations can differ from segment to segment, and some places limit activities like overnight camping on certain properties.
For navigation and planning, use the trail’s online mapping resources (the route is broken into state-specific segments and trail information pages) and cross-check access points for the specific segment you’re hiking rather than assuming consistent head-in parking or permissions everywhere along the corridor.
