North Peaks Trail
North Peaks Trail is a rugged 5.7-mile one-way backcountry hike on the northern side of Baxter State Park, reaching Hamlin Peak (4,756 ft) on Mount Katahdin.
This is a long, strenuous trek with substantial elevation gain (3,418 ft to Hamlin Peak). Expect a route that stays mostly tree-covered until it rises above the treeline for the upper climb.
The trail leaves the Northwest Basin Trail about 1.2 miles from Russell Pond, then follows Tracy Brook south before breaking out above the tree line and climbing across the exposed North Peaks to Hamlin Peak.
The line of the route follows the general course of the old 1887 Tracy and Love Trail. Because the approach is remote and the trail is demanding, it’s typically used as a day hike from Russell Pond or as part of longer loops.
A common way to extend the hike is combining North Peaks with the Northwest Basin Trail for a Russell Pond–based long day (or backpacking loop). Longer Russell Pond to Baxter Peak options also exist when you add the relevant summit connector trails.
Route finding can be tricky below the treeline where the trail doesn’t always match GPS tracks well; good visibility and careful navigation are important for keeping your line on this route.
Baxter State Park’s wilderness management means you should plan ahead for access and logistics, including how you’ll reach Russell Pond/nearby trailheads and what you’ll carry for a full-day push.
The park also warns that blowdowns are common on these northern Katahdin trails after harsh winter weather, and stream crossings can be difficult depending on seasonal water levels.
