Orange Hut is a backcountry concrete-block shelter in Akatarawa Forest, maintained by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and local volunteers. It’s sized for small groups (6-person capacity) and is set up as a basic day-use stop with a toilet and a dedicated BBQ area.

Built to support access by multiple recreation styles, Orange Hut is approachable for trampers and hunters, and it’s also used by mountain bikers and 4WD vehicles. Use is first-come, first-served (no booking required), and motorised traffic is expected to stay on designated routes with a 30 km/h speed limit while nearby forestry work can occasionally restrict access.

The hut area works best as a short break rather than a full shelter plan: bring your own water treatment because nearby water is available but quality isn’t confirmed, pack out all rubbish, and be prepared for very limited cellphone coverage in the forest.

Leave-no-trace expectations apply at the hut: keep the site clean, and be mindful that forestry operations (including pest-control work) can lead to temporary restrictions or change access around the surrounding tracks.
