Otter Trail
Otter Trail is a multi-day hike along the Garden Route coast in South Africa, following the shoreline between Storms River Mouth and Nature’s Valley. The commonly followed walk takes about 5 days with 4 nights in huts.
The route is done inside Tsitsikamma National Park. It’s a cliff-and-forest coastal traverse with frequent steep ups and downs down to the beach or to river crossings.
A standard staging runs Day 1: Storms River Mouth to Ngubu; Day 2: Ngubu to Scott; Day 3: Scott to Oakhurst; Day 4: Oakhurst to André; Day 5: André to Nature’s Valley.
Distances by day are listed as ~4.8 km, 7.9 km, 7.7 km, 13.8 km, and 10.8 km respectively (total ~45 km on the usual walking itinerary). Day 4 is the longest day.
Expect major elevation swings over several days, with total vertical change reported as roughly 2,968 m gain for the full itinerary. Backcountry hut logistics shape pacing more than “fitness alone,” since you’re hiking to fixed overnight stops.
River crossings are a core part of the hike, with Bloukrans identified as the critical crossing on Day 4 and timed to tides. The crossing is part of the main route rather than an optional detour.
Overnight huts are basic: you stay in comfortable hut accommodation, but you need your own sleeping setup and to carry what you need for food and cooking. The trek uses hut-based overnight stops (no camping-style itinerary on this route).
