Pahautea Hut
Pāhautea Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Pirongia Forest Park. It sleeps up to 20 people on platform bunks in two bunkrooms, with mattresses provided; there’s no heating or cooking facilities, so bring a portable cooker and plan to cook without an onboard stove or fireplace. A water supply is available but it’s untreated, so treat it before drinking. Use is linked to bookings for the hut and nearby campsite—standard bookings are required, and no spaces are held for walk-ins without a booking.
The hut sits next to Pāhautea Hut Campsite and has an external toilet setup: toilets are provided with pit latrine disposal. Fees apply, and you’ll need to book for both the hut and campsite when planning a stay. The hut is at about 900 m elevation, and conditions on Pirongia can be wet and cold—carry warm, waterproof clothing, plan your routes in advance, and come prepared with enough food for an extra night, plus a fully charged mobile phone and a distress beacon.
