Parks Peak Hut
Parks Peak Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, used for overnight stays on the long climb to an exposed ridge. It’s a standard six-bunk hut at about 1320 m altitude, built in 1960 by the New Zealand Forest Service and replaced by DOC in 2008. Use is first come, first served: no standard bookings are required, but you need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited stays at most standard and serviced huts over a 12-month period).
The hut has tank water and a woodburner for heating, plus a pit latrine toilet. Drinking water is untreated. For access, DOC lists long, strenuous approaches—10 km (4–5 hr) from Wakarara Road End, 13.5 km (about 6 hr) from Masters Shelter (via Mangleton Road and a route over Pohatuhaha Trig), or 6.4 km (about 2 hr 40 min) from Sentry Box Hut via steep track links and the Parks Peak Track. The official page also emphasizes safe river/stream crossings—don’t cross flooded or unsafe rivers/side streams and turn back or wait if unsure.
