Phillips Ridge Route
Phillips Ridge Route is an alpine wilderness trek in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, commonly used as the access line for the Golden Hinde (the highest peak on the island).
In this route relation, the mapped hiking line covers about 24.27 km and is built from alpine-path segments (with a 2-member route relation) rather than a fully graded footpath throughout.
Expect expert terrain and real route-finding work beyond the initial approach: the hike transitions into an off-trail ridge traverse where you’ll be negotiating frequent drops and re-gains, plus steep, loose ground and steep heather slopes.
On the ridge itself, water can be sparse and seasonal, and you should plan for filtering/carrying between reliable spots rather than assuming continuous streams along the traverse.
Route-finding quality matters: even with GPS, this area is known to require navigation judgment—people report cairned lines and fainter routes on some variants, while others end up bushwhacking to connect objectives.
For timing and effort, typical Golden Hinde day objectives via Phillips Ridge are described as a long, hard push (about half-day to full-day ranges depending on turnaround; full objectives commonly expand to multi-day schedules).
