Randbøl Hede, southwest of Randbøl, is one of the few remaining moorland landscapes and with its 750 hectares one of Denmark's largest inland units. Randbøl Hede was already protected in 1932. At that time it was the largestconservation area in Denmark. The conservation area covers 750 hectares, of which the state currently owns approx. 650 hectares. The purpose was to preserve the open heather-covered plains and ensure the heat against cultivation and planting. Randbøl Hede used to be much bigger than it is today. It was inconvenient, desolate and feared by everyone, especially business travelers, because robbers housed here. The trail from Vorbasse stud road, where cattle have been brought to market in Vorbasse or even further south for centuries, continues to meander across the moor. In the 1750s, the peasant rights of grazing and peat cutting were established, and part of the heath became the property of the king (state). In 1760 the so-called "potato Germans" began to cultivate the heath. They were later named because they taught the Danes how to eat potatoes. The colonization and cultivation was a very tedious job, partially unsuccessful, and most Germans returned home. On Stoltenbjerg by Staldbakkerne there is a fantastic view of the area. The stables are made up of sand which is "horizontal" eastwards from the west coast. Frederikshåb Plantation In 1802, the state decided to build a plantation of approx. 450 hectares of Randbøl Hede. It became the starting point for Frederikshåb Plantation. In 1804 sowing of birch and pine started. The work progressed slowly because the sand escape had to be fought first with dikes and by planting helmets. It took almost 100 years before the plantation was closed to forest, of mostly red spruce. However, the storm on December 3, 1999 changed the plantation dramatically. Ca. 1/3 of the forest overturned - a total of 75,000 cubic meters of wood. Today the areas are again planted with a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. Frederikshåb Plantation contains a peculiar natural phenomenon, called the Seven Years' Lakes. Sometimes you can find a large lake, at other times the water is gone and you can walk on the bottom of the lake. The plantation contains large inland dunes and a peculiar area of approx. 175, 5,000 years old, stone cairns.
