The history In the old days, mounds were used for communication over long distances. If people needed to gather, large bonfires were lit on the top. Vittrup Baun was used in this way right up until 1840. On the top of the baun you'll also find a concrete post stone which, together with a network of 330 similar posts, is used as a basis for map surveys. Escape the German Occupation During World War II, the German military used the baun as a lookout and listening post. At first they lived in tents, later barracks were built. The Germans' equipment was protected by trenches and barbed wire and even landmines. In the eastern part of Baunen you can still see traces of this period.
