Pichler's Perch

Pichler's Perch is a Mountaineering Club of Alaska backcountry wilderness hut on Eklutna Glacier, sleeping about 8–10 people. Built in 1964 as the club’s first hut, it functions as a simple shelter for glacier-travel parties; access is member-limited. Use your own trash compactor bags for human waste, and be prepared for no provided water—there’s only a trickle reported about 30 yards southeast of the hut. A two-burner cook stove is available, and fuel guidance is to bring white gas; the hut also has a lantern (no fireplace).

Access involves glacier travel skills and inherent glacier hazards on Eklutna Glacier; route conditions are described as condition dependent, with deep crevasses, undercut bergschrunds, steep ice, and changing hazards as the glacier melts. The hut sits about 4 miles from the last bridge and about 16½ miles from the Eklutna Lake parking lot. On approach, follow the Eklutna Lake trail past the East Fork Bridge (mile 11) to Eklutna River bridge (mile 12), then proceed by glacier route as described for southbound or northbound travel.
