Pioneer Cabin

Pioneer Cabin is a backcountry wilderness hut in the Sawtooth National Forest, built in 1937 as a ski hut and still used for winter ski touring and as a lunch stop in summer. It sits high on a saddle in the Pioneer Mountains (about 9,400 feet) and is reached via the Pioneer Cabin Trail or the North Fork Hyndman Creek Trail—both involve climbs that are somewhat strenuous.

Plan on bare-bones facilities: there are no restrooms and no potable water at the cabin. Pack out all trash and be prepared to share the space with other hikers or backcountry skiers. Bring your own sleeping setup, food, and water; having a backup tent or bivy helps if the floor space is already full. Use is free and does not rely on an official booking or reservation system (first-come, first-served for overnight use).
