Plain of Six Glaciers Trail

Plain of Six Glaciers Trail is a day-hike in Banff National Park that takes you from the Lake Louise lakeshore up to the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse, then back the same way (out-and-back). The route is mapped here as a 9.24 km hike for this dataset; hikers planning a full “to the teahouse” day should expect a moderate climb over several hours.

The hike starts essentially flat along the Lake Louise shoreline, staying on the lakeshore trail before transitioning onto the Plain of Six Glaciers ascent. After you leave the lakefront, the terrain turns into a steep, sustained climb through moraine and rocky ground.

As the trail rises, the namesake glacier views start to come into focus—targets include Victoria Glacier and other named glaciers associated with the route (Aberdeen, Upper and Lower Lefroy, Upper and Lower Victoria, Pope). The classic “glacier roar” is a frequent payoff on the upper approach near the moraine.

The approach to the teahouse includes steeper sections and switchbacks, with some exposed narrow-travel on rock near the cliffy side of the valley. The most demanding hiking is concentrated in the latter portion of the route as you work your way toward the teahouse area.

The Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse sits along the trail as the key turnaround/goal. It operates without electricity and is built/connected to the historic mountain-gastropod model of a stop for hikers; plans commonly center on stopping there for food and hot drinks before heading back down.

Beyond the teahouse, there is a further path toward the glacier front/base area described by trip guides as narrower and more demanding than the main hike—commonly treated as optional if you’re managing time or comfort with exposure/rocky terrain.
