Poboktan Creek trail
Poboktan Creek trail is a long-distance backpacking route in Jasper National Park built around the Brazeau Loop and the Great Divide Trail. In the Brazeau Loop, Poboktan Pass links the route over high terrain between Jonas Cutoff and the brazeau-side camp system, making this a key “high pass” segment rather than a casual creek walk.
Distance and time expectations for the Poboktan Creek trail segment are commonly planned in the multi-day range: the route is described as a point-to-point backpacking trip of about 33.2 miles (roughly 53.4–54 km), often taking 3 to 4 days depending on pace and conditions.
Elevation is a major factor. The route is described with about 5,387 feet (about 1,642 m) of elevation gain across the point-to-point line, with multiple high-elevation crossings including Jonas Shoulder (2,470 m) and Jonas Pass / Poboktan Pass (with Poboktan Pass referenced at about 2,300 m).
The route’s high country is where planning and travel speed get driven: late-season snow can linger into mid/late summer, and passes can remain snow-covered until late July. Early-season travel is discouraged because the higher crossings are sensitive to lingering snow loads.
Logistics matter because the route is not set up for a simple out-and-back. Access typically requires a car shuttle or pre-arranged transport: it begins on the Icefields Parkway area (often via Nigel Pass / Nigel Creek trailhead) and finishes closer to the Sunwapta Station or Brazeau River side.
Backcountry camping is part of the route design, with designated places mentioned for overnight stays such as Four Point, Jonas Cutoff, and Brazeau Lake campgrounds. Overnight wilderness camping requires an advance reservation/permit for Jasper National Park backcountry trips.
Trail policy constraints for this corridor are specific: the route is part of the Trail #132 system for the Brazeau Loop, and dogs are not permitted on the Poboktan Creek trail (with the exception of camping areas that lie outside the no-dogs segment boundaries). Fires are restricted to designated fire pits, and campfires are not allowed at Jonas Cutoff campground.
