Precipice Trail

Precipice Trail is a strenuous hike in Acadia National Park, climbing the east face of Champlain Mountain with exposed, open cliff sections and iron rungs. Expect a route that mixes boulders/granite steps with near-vertical climbing on fixed metal aids rather than a simple footpath.

The climb goes up quickly: you rise over 1,000 feet in about 0.9 miles while traversing narrow ledges and open rock. A wooden bridge and occasional iron handrails help you move across the early exposed ledge system before the main vertical ladder/rung stretches.

Plan for a loop rather than reversing the hardest climbing. Descending the Precipice itself is dangerous and not advised; the standard return is down the North Ridge Trail of Champlain Mountain, then back via the Orange and Black Path to the parking area.

From the summit area, the route continues back through the Champlain North Ridge descent (open granite with steep sections). When you reach the junction 0.6 miles from the North Ridge, turn right onto the Orange and Black Path; watch for steep bits there as well.

Typical timing is about 2–3 hours for a 3.2-mile round trip, depending on pace and stops for footing and handholds. The trail is strenuous and not recommended for small children, for people with a fear of heights, or for anyone in wet weather.

Seasonality is tied to peregrine falcons: the trail and associated areas are closed during the nesting period to prevent disturbance. Check current conditions for the exact closure dates before you go, since they fall in spring and early summer.

Bring gear for cold-to-changing weather and for fast exposure on granite and metal: good traction, closed-toe shoes, and extra layers. Wet rock and rungs are especially hazardous, so avoid the hike when the route is wet or in rain/snow conditions; scout the committed features and be ready to turn around if you find slick footing.
