Premužić Trail
Premužić Trail is a long-distance hut-to-hut hiking route through Croatia’s Velebit, laid out as a way to reach the most rugged north Velebit terrain with minimal steep climbing. The trail is built with the drystone technique and forms an even, walkable footway across karst sections that would otherwise be hard to cross on foot.
Route scale and protection status are set for the classic through-hike: the full trail is 57 km long, with a 16 km segment inside Northern Velebit National Park. The protected character also shows up in the route’s historic framing—placed under protection in its entire length as a cultural asset of national importance.
The classic run is point-to-point from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije, with a highest point of 1630 m (in Northern Velebit) and a lowest point of 920 m near Baške Oštarije. Average inclination is listed around 10%, with the steepest section reaching about 20% at Crikvena Saddle.
For planning as three main legs, the through-route is commonly split into 3 stages: Zavižan to Alan Hut (about 15.5–16 km), Alan Hut to Skorpovac (about 20 km), then Skorpovac to Baške Oštarije (about 14 km).
On-the-ground logistics are centered on shelters and huts along the line, with Rossi’s shelter about two hours’ walk from Zavižan. Branching side paths leave the main tread for peaks such as Gromovača, Crikvena, and Šatorina—useful when you want a shorter summit detour without breaking the through-hike rhythm.
Construction history is part of the trail’s identity: construction began in 1930, stalled due to lack of funds for a season, then resumed and was finalized in summer 1933. The last and most difficult build segment is identified as the 1.5 km stretch from Čepuraš to Gromovača; the trail’s route was laid out to improve access to Hajdučki i Rožanski Kukovi.
Climb profile is one reason it’s held up as a “famous hike” rather than a technical mountaineering line: there are virtually no steep ascents on the main ridge route from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije, which makes it workable for hikers without mountaineering skills.
