Hiking route

Primrose Trail is a 7.5-mile one-way hiking segment of the Iditarod National Historic Trail in Alaska’s Chugach National Forest, running from Primrose Campground to Lost Lake. The route starts with a gradual 5-mile climb through dense forest before reaching an alpine zone with lakes, rolling terrain, and wide-ranging views.

Plan on a steep effort: the climb totals about 1,600 feet of gain with typical grades in the 10–20% range. The Usual pace cited is roughly 4–5 hours for the one-way hike, so run it as a committed ascent rather than an easy walk.

The middle section passes cultural sites in the trail corridor, including the Charles G. Hubbard cabin and mine ruins. A working goldmine can be seen around Mile 3.7 on the route.

Near Mile 2 there is an steep spur that leads to a view of Primrose Falls. It’s described as unmarked and unmaintained, so treat it as a locate-and-choose side trip rather than a guaranteed detour.

The transition into alpine terrain comes near tree line: snow can persist higher up into July, and the season can be late even when lower elevations are clear.

For access, at mile 17 of the Seward Highway turn west onto Primrose Road and travel 1 mile to Primrose Campground; park in the large area before entering the campground, and use the trailhead at the far end of the campground road.
