Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail

Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail is a long-distance hike through Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks, using the historic Ramapo-Dunderberg corridor with red-blaze navigation. It’s commonly broken into day loops or multi-day trips rather than a single continuous outing because the route is long and elevation-demanding.

Point-to-point options are built around the classic terminals: Tuxedo Park to Dunderberg Mountain, or the shorter Jones Point to Tuxedo Park direction. The full route is described as about 22 miles with roughly 5,500 feet of gain, and typical completion times land in the 11.5–13 hour range for strong hikers.

On the ground, the trail climbs repeatedly over major high points and passes prominent names along the way—Black Ash, Parker Cabin, Tom Jones, Bald Mountain, and Dunderberg Mountain—so expect sustained ascent rather than a gentle profile.

For a more manageable day outing, the Ramapo-Dunderberg and Triangle Trail Loop pairs Ramapo-Dunderberg with Triangle-related terrain into a loop in the ~7.3–12.5 mile range. Another common loop pairing is the Dunderberg, Bald Mountain, and The Timp Loop starting at Jones Point.

Marking and route-finding can be tricky in places; even though the trail is blazed red, it’s known to be easy to lose alignment off the main tread. Plan for an active detour setup around the Palisades Interstate Parkway using the Anthony Wayne Overpass when the Appalachian Trail system needs a reroute through Harriman.

If you’re organizing logistics, Bear Mountain State Park charges an entrance fee, and the trail has practical access via parking areas at both ends of the ride-hike chain—Anthony Wayne parking near the Harriman side and Rampo-Dunderberg parking off 202/9W/Liberty Drive.

Camping is handled within the park system along the corridor, with multiple designated campsites/shelters referenced for longer trips (examples mentioned include Tom Jones Shelter and Bald Rocks Shelter).
