Ramseys Draft Trail
Ramseys Draft Trail is a one-way, long-distance hiking route in Ramseys Draft Wilderness on the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests. It’s a remote, rugged line through steep drainage country with wilderness rules in effect.
The route is about 7 miles one-way and is generally treated as moderate to strenuous, with the terrain staying rough. Expect obstacles like downed trees, plus multiple water crossings as you work up the drainage.
Route character follows Ramseys Draft Creek, climbing along the creek for a stretch before the trail system diverges into old-growth forest. The climb eventually trends toward the summit area of Hardscrabble Knob, where it connects with Bald Ridge / Hardscrabble Knob trails.
Elevation ranges from about 2,200 feet at the Mountain House trailhead area up to roughly 4,482 feet at the summit of Hardscrabble Knob. The practical gain is that you’re hiking sustained up along a steep, wet drainage rather than a rolling ridge walk.
Water is the main logistical issue. The trail crosses the draft several times and wilderness conditions mean the route can be extremely wet or hazardous when stream levels rise; camping near the creek can also put you at risk from fast changes in water.
One commonly cited management note: the wilderness regulations apply, including restrictions on mechanized or motorized equipment. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash in wilderness areas; plan for backcountry navigation since wilderness trails may not be marked or heavily maintained.
Access is typically from the Mountain House Picnic Area trailhead. Directions commonly given start at the junction of VA 275 and US 250, drive west on US 250 about 20 miles, turn right into the Mountain House Picnic Area, then continue to the trailhead parking.
