Red Bay Lake Cabin

Red Bay Lake Cabin is a remote backcountry cabin on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Forest. It’s a 15 x 17-foot, two-story log cabin with a sleeping loft and wooden bunkbeds (mattresses not provided), designed to sleep up to eight guests. Heating is via a wood stove, and there’s an outdoor toilet; there’s no running water or electricity, so you’ll need to bring or source essentials on your own.

Access is by float plane, or by a vehicle/hiking/boating combination. The approach from Forest Road #20 involves a 3/4-mile hike on boardwalk to a boat provided at the lake, then about a 1.5-mile row to the cabin. The cabin is equipped with an aluminum skiff with oars available at the cabin (bring a long-shaft motor if you plan to use one). The cabin is for recreation such as hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing; water must be filtered, boiled, or chemically treated before drinking, and wood/food/garbage are managed as backcountry packing tasks (including packing out all garbage and food).

Guests should plan for extremely remote conditions and potential weather delays; in fall, winter, and early spring the cabin may be inaccessible because float planes can’t land on the frozen lake surface. Bring sleeping bags/pads, a cook stove and fuel, fire starter, utensils/cooking gear, a light source (lantern), toilet paper, first-aid supplies, and garbage bags; firewood may be available but supply can’t be guaranteed.
