Red Shirt Cabin #1
Red Shirt Cabin #1 is a public-use wilderness cabin in the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area on an island near the Red Shirt Lake shoreline in Alaska. The cabin is 20' x 24' with a covered porch, and it sleeps up to 7 guests; pets are allowed (but must be kept under control and you’re responsible for cleanup).
Use is limited to 5 nights, with check-in/out listed as 12:00pm. It’s a rustic, non-insulated cabin, which may be unsuitable for everyone in winter—reserve with winter conditions in mind.
Amenities include a wood stove with a fire ring and a picnic table, and lake access is part of the setting. For heat you need to bring your own wood, and the cabin uses a wood heating method.
Summer access is by a 3-mile hike from the Red Shirt Lake trailhead followed by crossing Red Shirt Lake by canoe; you either carry a canoe to the lake or rent one locally. Winter access is by plane or by a winter trail for about 7.5 to 8 miles using registered snowmobile, skis, snowshoes, or dog sled (ATVs prohibited).
Reservations are handled through Reserve America. Pricing is $125 per night (entire hut), and there’s a non-refundable transaction fee added to reservations. Prepare for backcountry travel: bring sleeping gear, food/cookware, a cooking stove and fuel, matches/lighters/fire starter, water storage/purification, first aid, flashlight/lantern and fuel, plus the items you’ll need for the wood stove and smoke detector battery.
