Refuge des Grands Mulets
Refuge des Grands Mulets is a high-mountain refuge in the Mont Blanc massif, run by the Club Alpin Français. It sits on a rock island surrounded by ice at 3,051 m, on the north side of Mont Blanc, positioned at the junction of two streams of the Bossons Glacier.
The refuge is staffed in summer, and it’s used in different ways depending on conditions: in summer it can serve as an alternate ascent line toward Mont Blanc via the historical route, while in spring it’s commonly used by ski-mountaineers. The current refuge dates from 1960 and was inaugurated on August 7 by Maurice Herzog.
Capacity is 68 beds when the refuge is wardened, and 16 beds when it’s not in wardened mode. Staffing runs from 30 March to 31 July 2026. Online reservations are opened for 2026 from Christmas 2025 until the refuge closes in its wardened mode; no telephone (or social media) bookings are accepted except 48 hours before the desired date, and the guard/warden can still provide route and access guidance during the season.
If you’re planning a hut night on this line, plan around glacier route-finding demands in fog and crevassed terrain below the hut, especially when approaching or descending the Bossons Glacier corridor.
