Refuge du Chambeyron
Refuge du Chambeyron is a backcountry refuge operated by Club Alpin Français in the Ubaye area, at 2,626 m. It sits on the shores of Lac Premier, below the Brec de Chambeyron (3,389 m). The refuge has 69 sleeping places and is accessed on foot by mountain approaches; it is also used as a base for alpinism targets such as the Brec de Chambeyron and the Aiguilles de Chambeyron.
During the guarded season, the refuge is tended from mid-June to mid-September. Outside of guard, it can be used by hikers in self-sufficiency mode, with a dormitory (including blankets available), a common room, and dry toilets. Meals are planned via on-site guardianship during the guarded period, and bookings are handled through the refuge’s reservation system up to 48 hours before arrival; last-minute meal/reservation requests can be made by phone.
The hut setup is spartan: there is no shower and no running water. There is no gas for cooking, and the wood stove is for warming only (not for cooking on top). A wood stove is provided, but a reminder is in place that there may be no firewood at the refuge at times, so carry suitable ignition/packing plans; a torrent below the refuge can be used for water. A charging policy is enforced via an honor payment per person per night, and guests are expected to leave the site clean and remove all waste.
