Riggs Spring Loop Trail
Riggs Spring Loop Trail is an 8.6-mile (13.9 km) backcountry loop in Bryce Canyon National Park that begins and ends at Yovimpa Point. The route travels off the rim into forested terrain and down toward Corral Hollow, then returns up to Yovimpa Pass and back to the Yovimpa Point area.
The loop’s lower section is routed through spruce, fir, and bristlecone forests, with a steeper, more heavily forested western segment. Expect a long descent followed by a substantial climb back up to the rim area around Yovimpa Pass.
Day hiking doesn’t require a backcountry permit, but all overnight backcountry stays do. There are four backcountry campsites on the Riggs Spring Loop, and you’ll need to obtain a permit for using them.
Elevation gain is about 2,200 feet (671 meters), and the loop is commonly paced around roughly 5 hours for a day hike. The NPS notes the western section is steeper and that the trail is a natural-terrain backcountry route rather than a developed, easy-to-follow path.
Water planning matters: there is a spring near the midpoint, but the guidance emphasizes carrying enough water for your hike and treating/purifying any natural sources before drinking. No water-fill stations are listed along the route.
It may be inaccessible during mid-winter because of deep snow (reported range 2–15 ft / 0.7–5 m). Pets aren’t allowed on this trail; service animals are allowed in national parks.
