Ringmo to Shey Trail
Ringmo to Shey Trail is a long-distance trek in Nepal’s Upper Dolpo region that links Ringmo Village on the shore of Phoksundo Lake to Shey Gompa. The route is run at high altitude, with Kang La Pass as the high point (5,350m).
Expect a 5–7 day itinerary over roughly 20–25 miles, with the most demanding stretch being the day that pushes up toward Kang La and then drops into the valley that leads to Shey Gompa.
The Ringmo end is tied closely to the Phoksundo Lake area, and the route is described as going north from Ringmo along the lake. The trek includes time at/near Phoksundo Lake before turning toward the steeper approach used to set up the crossing.
On the way up to the pass, the route description includes a steep, rugged ascent through cedar forests and rocky river valleys to reach the base of Kang La (often referenced as Kang La Phedi/High Camp).
From Kang La Pass, the route description emphasizes scree-heavy terrain on the climb and then a steep descent into the valley for the Shey Gompa approach. This is the core “grueling” day of the trek.
Because this is remote Upper Dolpo trekking, access is restricted and preparation is paperwork-heavy: a Special Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit plus a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit and a TIMS card are part of the requirements. Teahouse infrastructure is limited, so trekking with full support (guide and camping/porter setup) is typically the practical way to do it.
