Sabine Hut
Sabine Hut is a serviced 32-bunk backcountry hut in Nelson Lakes National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for trampers using the huts network in the Nelson Lakes area, with drinking water available for use from the hut water supply and toilets with a pit latrine disposal system on site.
Bookings are required for stays. Fees apply (with adult and youth nightly rates), and backcountry hut passes are valid from 1 May to 30 September; the passes aren’t accepted for 1 October to 30 April. A hut-ticket option via an honesty box is used for fee payment at the hut, and bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027. For fuel, no firewood is supplied from May to September—gather only dead wood from surrounding forests and don’t fell or break branches off live trees.
Plan for water and biosecurity: campers may use the hut water supply and toilets, and there’s a biosecurity cleaning station at the hut to disinfect boots, socks, clothing, towels, and drink bottles that have been wet or damp from lake or river water. The Rotoroa Route alongside the eastern side of Lake Rotoroa between Rotoroa village and Sabine Hut is permanently closed; this does not affect the Travers–Sabine Circuit unless you were planning to end at Rotoroa village.
