Sarrail Ridge Trail

Sarrail Ridge Trail is a short but steep day hike in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country, accessed via the Rawson Lake approach. The ridge section is the crux: after the end of the official Rawson Lake hike, the route continues onto an unmaintained, loose, open hillside ascent where you’ll scramble up rock and dirt before reaching the top of Sarrail Ridge.

Route length is about 0.7 km for the mapped Sarrail Ridge segment, but the commonly completed out-and-back outing is much longer because it includes the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail portion and the Rawson Lake route before the ridge push.

From the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail you transition to Rawson Lake, then continue along Rawson Lake to the far end where Sarrail Ridge begins nearly straight uphill. The ridge traverse runs along the northern side of Rawson Lake and into an alpine-meadow approach that steepens as you move up.

The Sarrail Ridge ascent is very steep and involves loose dirt/shale and a short scramble. Some hikers encounter fixed rope assistance during the scrambling start and use it both on the way up and down when conditions make traction difficult.

Seasonality is a big factor here: the ridge route is associated with avalanche terrain and is not something to attempt in winter. The more workable hiking window is generally mid-summer through early fall, with guidance to avoid periods when snow risk or lingering snow/ice makes travel unsafe.

Logistics for the full Sarrail Ridge outing commonly start at the Upper Kananaskis Lake Day Use Area, where you pick up the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail and then follow the junction to Rawson Lake before continuing to the ridge. Plan for a half-day commitment; typical hike time for the full route to Sarrail Ridge is on the order of a few hours (often quoted around 4–5.5 hours).

Because the descent is steep and on loose footing, treat Sarrail Ridge as a turn-around discipline hike: many parties are cautious about summiting if conditions or footing aren’t right, since returning down requires control and good traction.
