Scott Duncan Hut
Route Details
Scott Duncan Hut is an Alpine Club of Canada backcountry hut on the Wapta Icefields, positioned on a bench above a rock bluff on the northwest ridge of Mt. Daly. Built in 1988, itβs commonly used as a final stopover for people tackling the Wapta Traverse. The hut has a maximum capacity of 12 and is equipped with a propane stove (mattress bedding and a propane heat source are provided) plus an outhouse bathroom; there is no light source beyond propane, and no heat/fireplace is provided beyond what the propane system offers.
Rates are listed on the hut page (member standard $50; non-member standard $60). The hut can be accessed most commonly from Balfour Hut as part of the Wapta to the north, but it can also be approached directly from the #1 highway to the south; from the north approach, the terrain between the two huts is described as demanding on the icefields, with guidance to only undertake the trip in favorable conditions with stable snow and good visibility. In winter, the hut is part of ski touring and ski mountaineering use, with avalanche terrain and glacier travel involved (ATES class 1 is noted on the page), and a typical winter direct trip is described with a 10 km approach and about 520 m of elevation gain from Balfour Hut.
