Seamans Hut
Seamans Hut is a stone alpine emergency and day-use shelter in Kosciuszko National Park, maintained by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. It sits on Etheridge Range near the road route from Charlottes Pass toward Mount Kosciuszko.
Built in 1929 following the 1928 deaths of skiers W. Laurie Seaman and Evan Hayes, the hut was constructed by the Seaman family to prevent a similar tragedy and to provide refuge for future park users. It’s designed specifically for day use and emergency overnight shelter only.
The hut is accessed on foot (and also by skis or mountain bike), using routes that begin from the Charlottes Pass area (road access is closed to vehicles) or via walking and skiing trails from Thredbo or Guthega.
Inside, it’s a small cabin with plank flooring and two rooms plus a foyer used for firewood storage. Fireplaces and firewood are available for stove use, and the hut has emergency supplies that are supported by goodwill rather than being maintained as an official stock.
