Section House
Section House is a winter ski hut run by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association at an elevation of 11,481 ft. Built in 1882 as a railroad section house, it fell into disrepair and was resurrected in 1993; restoration was completed in 1996, and the hut officially opened in December 1997. The hut sleeps 12 with two main sleeping areas (two sets of single bunks on the main level; upstairs has two bedrooms with double beds and single beds), and it has heat, a wood-burning stove, and a propane kitchen setup. There’s a wood stove/firewood plus a composting outdoor vault toilet and solar-powered lighting for winter use.
Use requires a reservation (and a parking permit for access is part of the booking materials). The hut is set up with a fully equipped propane cooktop and propane oven, dishes and cookware, coffee supplies, and winter water via snow melt (winter only). A fee applies for stays, and use is locked to booked access (not walk-up use).
