Sefton Bivvy
Sefton Bivouac is a Department of Conservation backcountry bivvy in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It’s the oldest hut in the park still on its original site and is used by climbers heading toward Sefton and Footstool.
The hut has 4 bunk beds and runs on a first-come, first-served basis (no bookings). A daily radio check-in and weather update to alpine huts in the park occurs at 4:45 pm; the process is explained in the hut. Toilets are provided nearby by an outdoor pit latrine-style setup, and the water supply is untreated. The route to the biv is unmarked—reaching it involves route finding through steep terrain with high fall consequence, and winter access requires mountaineering skills, route finding, and avalanche knowledge.
