Hiking route

Sentinel Mountain Trail is a long-distance Baxter State Park hike built around a short, rocky approach from Kidney Pond and a steeper final push to Sentinel Mountain’s summit loop. Plan on a ~5.5–6.2 mile round-trip with about ~1,172 ft of elevation gain and roughly 3 to 4.5 hours moving time.

Start at Kidney Pond Campground day-use parking and follow the trail that wraps along the west side of Kidney Pond. The opening section stays comparatively flat but is boulder-strewn, so the pace is never “easy”—watch your footing on uneven ground.

After the Kidney Pond stretch, the route turns into the forest and begins sustained climbing. Expect boggy ground and small stream crossings; several narrow bog bridges and damp crossings mean sturdy shoes and careful steps matter, especially when the surface is slick.

The final segment is the steepest part of the hike. Work up through rocky, uneven trail to reach the top, where the trail continues onto a ~0.6-mile summit loop around Sentinel Mountain.

On the loop you’ll hit multiple lookouts and get broad views in every direction, including a front-and-center perspective toward Mount Katahdin. The summit loop also traverses exposed bedrock and alpine plant areas.

The route is known for roots, loose stones, and damp bog bridges; treat it as a route where traction and balance are part of the effort. If it’s been wet, inspect your footing before committing to each crossing or bridge section.

High value planning note: park capacity and day-use access at Baxter State Park can change day to day, so build time to handle entry logistics and parking before the hike. Also, be ready to carry everything you’ll need—there’s no reliable on-trail water sourcing for a full round-trip.
