Siberia Hut
Siberia Hut is a serviced 20-bunk backcountry hut in Mount Aspiring National Park (Wanaka/Makarora area), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a booking hut during the summer season—book online ahead of time for stays in the staffed/booking period. Outside that booking window, fees still apply; camping at the hut doesn’t require a booking.
The hut has basic facilities including a wood burner/fireplace and drinking water that’s untreated, plus toilets with pit latrine disposal. Bring a sleeping bag and your own stove and fuel, cookware, toilet paper, and rubbish bags to pack out all waste (including food scraps). Wood-burner use also means you’ll need newspaper/fire starter and matches/lighter, and a torch. The hut is typically wardened periodically during the booking season from 1 December to the end of April, and Advance Hut Passes are valid for use from 1 May to 30 September (not accepted from 1 October to 30 April). Rates and ticket/pass rules vary by date; the hut has both booking-required and non-booking periods within its season.
