Skerwink Trail

Skerwink Trail is a famous coastal loop hike on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, running between Port Rexton and Trinity East in the Trinity East area. It’s about 5.3 km and is designed as a loop rather than an out-and-back.

Expect a moderate-to-difficult walk built around coastal exposure: uneven footing, a number of wooden/stone steps, and steep cliffside sections as you move along the shore.

The payoff is the rugged shoreline geology and marine wildlife. The route is known for dramatic sea stacks and deep ocean coves, with seabirds and eagles overhead, whales in season (July–August), and icebergs in the right months (April–August).

You’ll also spend time with views toward the communities of Port Rexton and Trinity as the trail threads the coastal edge. The terrain includes coastal drops that require sure footing when the ground is wet.

Typical trip planning puts the loop at roughly 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on pace and how long you stop for photos and wildlife viewing. The focus is short-distance but effortful hiking because of the steps and grade changes.

Trailhead access starts in Port Rexton or Trinity East, depending on how you approach the loop. There’s no single “summit” moment—the route keeps you working up and down along the coast, then returns to where you started.
