Hiking route

Skyline Trail (251) is a long-distance hiking route in the Pecos Wilderness of northern New Mexico, following high ground around the Pecos River valley. The route is often used as a thru-hike in sections because the terrain and travel can be rugged over extended distances.

The commonly listed mileage is about 69–70 miles, with elevation gain on the order of 13,000+ feet. Expect sustained altitude changes for most of the hike, rather than a short day-trail profile.

For planning, the route is described as running from Barillas Peak (east of Pecos, NM) to just beyond Deception Peak at the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The Santa Fe Ski Basin area is also a common access point for starting the trail or joining it for a middle section.

A standard way to reach the Skyline Trail corridor mid-route is via Winsor Trail (#254) from the Santa Fe Ski Basin, about a 4.2-mile approach to connect with Skyline Trail. The Skyline route shares junctions with other numbered trails in the same wilderness area, so take time to confirm you’re on ref 251 at each intersection.

One thru-hike planning choice is to follow leftward/west-southwest options from the Skyline Trail connection toward Santa Fe Baldy, Lake Katherine, and Spirit Lake; another direction choice stays ridge-focused to reach features such as Stewart Lake, Johnson Lake, and Pecos Baldy Lake. These options are used to shape a multi-day line through the Pecos Wilderness high country.

Travel conditions can be affected by downed trees and old burn areas in parts of the route. Local volunteer groups have done clearing work on at least portions between Winsor and Penitente Peak and on other Skyline Trail work trips, which helps inform expectations for where trail layout may be more or less obvious.
