South Plateau Loop

South Plateau Loop is an easy hiking loop in Monte Sano State Park near Huntsville, Alabama, running around the south plateau of Monte Sano Mountain. The route is short—about 3.1 to 3.5 miles—and is typically done in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.

Expect a mostly gentle outing with minimal elevation change for most of the loop, with only a brief section west of Bankhead Parkway that is a little more varied than the surrounding flat walking.

The trail follows a path along the edge/top of the plateau, passing through mixed hardwood forest. It also crosses areas with rock formations and limestone features, and there are occasional glimpses through trees toward the valley below (more noticeable in winter when foliage is thinner).

On the loop you’ll find interpretive signs and multiple places to pause, including stone/timber shelters and benches/rest areas along the way.

The loop connects into the larger Monte Sano trail network, so it’s easy to extend by linking with nearby trails such as Fire Tower Trail, Bog Trail, Warpath Ridge, Mountain Mist, and Bucca Family Trail.

For planning: the route is described as dog-friendly for leashed dogs, and the ground is generally dirt/natural surface with some gravel sections, so it can get muddy after rain.
