Spring Canyon Trail #247

Spring Canyon Trail #247 is a long-distance out-and-back hiking route in the Gila Wilderness area. The trail works its way along Sapillo Creek country before dropping back down toward the Gila River. The route is designated for non-motorized, non-mechanized use.

From the Spring Canyon Trailhead on the west side of New Mexico Highway 15 near Sapillo Creek, you begin with limited parking at the trailhead; extra space is available at the New Mexico Highway 15/35 intersection. The trail is open year-round and has no fee for use.

Route length is about 14 to 18 miles round trip, with elevation gain reported around 2,900 to 4,100 feet depending on how far you push the canyon and where you turn around. Expect a strenuous to hard effort profile for a long day in rough canyon terrain.

Trail character is creek-and-ridge traveling: it climbs from Sapillo Creek, then parallels the creek along a ridge top before dropping back down from near where Sapillo Creek meets the Gila River. Rolling canyon country above the creek sets the pace for most of the hike.

Water crossings are a recurring logistical piece. Depending on season, plan on roughly 5 to 7 water crossings and bring water shoes if conditions call for it. Water sources include springs and streams along the route, but water quality is not tested, so treat or filter anything you plan to drink.

Trail navigation can get tricky in places, with overgrowth and debris/loose rock making footing and route-finding more work than the mileage suggests. Stick to your turnpoints and plan to rely on maps offline if you’re hiking beyond the easiest-to-see sections.

The trip is within reach of services at Silver City (about 27 miles), but you’ll want to carry what you need because it’s not a carry-light corridor. Permits are required for commercial or organized uses, while day hiking does not require a permit.
