Stanley Mitchell Hut
Route Details
Stanley Mitchell Hut is an Alpine Club of Canada backcountry hut in the Little Yoho Valley area of Yoho National Park, set at about 2,055–2,060 m elevation. It serves as a summer base for hiking, scrambling, and climbing, and in winter it’s used for ski touring, with the hut acting as the final stop on the Yoho Traverse from the Wapta Icefield.
The hut is built/operated as a wilderness hut with wood heat and propane lighting and cooking. Water comes from the nearby creek (with boiling or filtering needed), and waste is handled via outhouse toilets. Summer capacity is 22, with winter also listed as capacity 22; the hut uses mattress bedding in a dormitory-style setup, and the booking rates are shown for both member and non-member stays, with peak-season pricing applying from June 15–October 15 in summer and December 1–April 30 in winter. Approaches are centered on the Takakkaw Falls area: in summer, the two common routes are the Little Yoho Valley Trail and the Iceline Trail (both start at the Takakkaw Falls parking lot), with the Iceline more common for the descent; in winter, common access is a long ski approach from the highway/road to Takakkaw Falls, or a less common multi-day route across the des Poilus Glacier from the Wapta Icefield.
