Steed Hut
Route Details
Steed Hut is a Kootenay Mountaineering Club backcountry cabin (public hut) at 2320 m in the Bonnington Range, placed south of Siwash Mountain with a small tarn nearby. The cabin is a snug wood structure built in 1995; it has a wood stove and stored basic cooking gear, plus a two-burner Coleman propane cook stove and Coleman propane lantern (you must bring your own 1 lb propane bottles, and spare lantern mantels). The upstairs loft sleeps four or more (no foam mattresses), and the downstairs includes table and bench seating.
Use is by reservation. The hut is $25 per person, per night with a 3-night maximum per booking period. There’s no water in the cabin in summer or winter, and dogs are no longer permitted at Steed hut. In winter, access is typically via the Bonnington Traverse route; in summer, access is via roads out of Bombi Summit, and a 4x4 isn’t required—after parking, reach the hut by bushwhacking (the operator describes 1–3 hours of bushwhacking with thick bush). Access by helicopter is not permitted.
