Stein Valley Traverse
Stein Valley Traverse is a demanding point-to-point wilderness trek in British Columbia’s Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park. Expect an all-day backcountry hike for roughly a week: about 92.6 km (55 miles) and commonly finished in 5–8 days depending on pace and how you break up the traverse.
Most parties run Lytton (east) to Lizzie Lake / Pemberton-area (west). The route is often chosen west-to-east (Lizzie Lake to Lytton) to start with the steepest elevation gain earlier in the trip rather than later.
Terrain shifts across the park: ponderosa pine–dominated forest and drier sections in the lower east valley give way to higher alpine country at the Stein Divide. The traverse includes major elevation change and exposed, rocky travel where snow is possible even outside winter.
Route character is built around backcountry self-reliance and limited infrastructure. Overnight travel is tied to established campgrounds plus a cabin near Lizzie Lake, and all overnight visitors must register for a BC Parks backcountry camping permit through the BC Parks reservation system.
Plan for river crossings tied to the Stein River corridor and its tributaries, including footbridges and cable car crossings that replace older systems in parts of the route. Getting across the Fraser for the eastern approach depends on the Lytton Ferry (free).
The western approach to Lizzie Lake requires a high-clearance vehicle on a rough forest service road. After you’re in the park, navigation and route-finding matter, especially once you move farther beyond the lower valley.
Seasonal timing usually targets July through September, though snow can still show up at higher elevations. Bring bear protection that follows park requirements (bear lockers or bear canisters), and expect wildlife presence.
Typical itinerary planning breaks the traverse into daily camp targets (for example: Riverside Camp, Cottonwood Creek, Avalanche Camp, Stein Lake, Puppet Lake, Caltha Lake, and Lizzie Cabin), with one commonly used schedule totaling 8 days and ending at the western trailhead.
