Hiking route

Sugarloaf Path is an East Coast Trail day hike linking Logy Bay and Quidi Vidi Village (St. John’s). The route runs about 8.8 km one way and is planned as a 3–5 hour outing.

Expect a coastal hike with major elevation work: two big climbs totaling about 150 m. The north end includes views from atop Sugarloaf Head, while the south end finishes with a 360° view from the Bawdens Highlands.

The trail crosses varied shoreline terrain—rock formations at the Skerries and time along rocky beaches—then blends into woodland hiking. Part of the route shares space with cyclists.

Navigation relies on the East Coast Trail signage system, including the white triangle marker and rock/wood markers on the shoreline and around exposed sections.

There are historical touchpoints along the way, including a WWII observation-station segment and a 1940s shipwreck site. The route also passes through an area described as having unique coastal rock features (including the Skerries formation).

For planning and logistics, there are services in Quidi Vidi Village but no facilities at the Logy Bay trailhead. Parking for the Logy Bay trailhead is at the East Coast Trail parking lot on the left-hand side of Marine Lab Road, not the Ocean Science Centre lot.
