Talapus Lake Trail

Talapus Lake Trail (#1039) is a moderate day hike in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest that follows Talapus Creek on a graded tread with switchbacks through forest. The trail starts in second-growth forest and gradually climbs, crossing Talapus Creek on a foot log at the Alpine Lakes Wilderness boundary.

At about mile 2.0, you reach Talapus Lake—an established destination for lunch and, for those backpacking, designated backcountry camping spots at the lake. Continuing on from Talapus Lake adds time and distance to reach nearby Olallie Lake.

The route is mapped as Trail #1039 (sac_scale: hiking) and uses a standard dirt path. Trail visibility is good, and the hike is listed as easy for this route entry.

Expect some wet-foot challenges in parts of the corridor: overuse and wet ground have been associated with muddy trail conditions and damaged boardwalk sections between the Wilderness boundary and the approach to Olallie Lake, especially earlier in the summer; take extra care on wet puncheon (raised log decking).

Access is from the Talapus Lake Trailhead, which provides entry to Talapus Lake Trail 1039 and into Alpine Lakes Wilderness. A valid Recreation Pass is required for the day-use fee; Northwest Forest Pass and Interagency Recreation Passes are honored, while Washington State Discover Pass is not valid at this US fee site.

Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. The trail is closed to stock, bicycles, and motorized vehicles; wilderness regulations apply within Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
