Tangihua Hut
Tangihua Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Tangihua Forest (Northland). It’s a standard hut with eight bunks, and use is first-come, first-served (no standard bookings). The hut provides a mattress, and there are toilet facilities with pit latrine disposal; drinking water is untreated.
Access involves advanced route-finding. From the Omana Road access car park, walk 30 minutes along a formed road to the bush line, then continue another 15 minutes to Lions Lodge; from there, follow the Te Haua Uru Track as it turns into the Northern Tangihua Route to reach Tangihua Hut (about 8–9 hours). Tangihua Forest access has restrictions on private land crossing and permissions: the land between Tangihua Forest and Tangihua Road is private, so you must get permission to cross it; dogs and firearms are not allowed on this private property. Fires are not permitted, and hunting is permitted only by permit. Take topographical maps and avoid introducing soil—scrub all soil off shoes and gear and use kauri cleaning stations.
Hut tickets are required: buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night in the honesty box at the hut (adults and youth have set per-night rates). Alternatively, use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.
