Taoyuan Valley Trail
Taoyuan Valley Trail (桃源谷步道) is a ridge hike on Taiwan’s northeast coast that links the grassland escarpment into the broader Caoling Trail network. The route is built around long stair sections and sustained climbing out of the coastal-side approach to the high, exposed grass ridge.
Expect a “steps-and-elevation” day: multiple guides describe the hike as essentially a 14.5 km line-of-steps walk, with most of the work coming from stone stair effort rather than technical trail obstacles. Mapped distance for this curated route is 14.5 km (day hike).
At the top, the defining experience is the open ridge—highland grass slopes with big horizon lines out over the Pacific. The ridge sits between Wankentou Mountain (灣坑頭山) and Neiliao Mountain (內寮山), forming a broad band of pasture people come to traverse and photograph.
Wild water buffalo are part of the valley landscape. The trail’s attraction includes the buffalo grazing around the grasslands, but hikers need to avoid getting too close for photos and keep awareness that the animals move through the same ridge areas visitors walk.
Three main line options are commonly used to reach the valley grassland (e.g., Neiliao, Daxi, Shiguanyin), and the “main” Taoyuan experience can be done as a point-to-point day between stations on the rail line. On the widely described circuit, hikers often start from Dali-side access and finish down toward Daxi-side access.
Shade is limited on the exposed ridge, and practical guides emphasize sun readiness and carrying enough water since there are no shops or refill stations in the valley itself. The ridgeline is described as fully exposed, so wind and wet weather matter for footing and comfort.
Seasonally, the grassland look changes: spring and summer for lush green pasture, and autumn and winter for silver grass. For planning, common guidance also flags slippery mossy conditions on stone steps during rainy weather. When the weather is clear and dry, the ridge hiking focus shifts back to the long views and open grass walking.
