Teddys Hut

Teddys Hut is a remote backcountry shelter in Kosciuszko National Park, used for grazing history and emergency accommodation. The hut is known as Teddys Hut (also referred to as Teddies / McGuffickes / My Horse Hut) and sits about 10 km up the Big Boggy River from Dead Horse Gap, with no booking system for overnight use; it’s positioned for emergency shelter rather than regular serviced stays.

Access is by a challenging approach: one option is a long walk up the Big Boggy (mostly on horse pads). An alternative route goes about 5 km straight up the spur behind the Thredbo village turnoff to an alpine plain, then over two hills by compass/GPS bearing to the hut—described as about 2.5 hours by this line, with scrub kept largely cleared since the 2003 fires, making navigation essential.

The hut is a simple structure with an iron roof and an earthen floor. Inside, it includes a stone fireplace/stone chimney setup, and there is a nearby brumby trap that remains visible just above the hut. It’s classed for heritage conservation; after the 2003 bushfire and later storm/repair work, it was restored and kept standing for walkers and skiers using the high country above Thredbo.
